I’ve realized that an easier way to ensure that the lead-follow happens is to add in another word association for the 4 counts of the Jive. So, while the feet still do the same movement, rather than call it as Back, Replace, Side, Replace, I sometimes mix it up with Push, Pull, Side, Replace which refer to what the hands are supposed to be doing.

Men find multi-tasking quite hard (and I speak from experience), so verbally saying the words out loud has a profound impact on actually executing the steps. This push / pull technique is mainly from the man’s POV, because if both the man and woman start pushing or pulling it just becomes a case of tug of war and you’re stuck in the same spot.
