Become an Awesome Social Jive Dancer

Go from being clumsy, confused and unsure of what you’re doing … to smooth, suave and confident.

Learn how to transform yourself into a confident social dance jiver!

Have you ever gone with friends for a night out to a restaurant or gymkhana and seen other couples dancing, while you, sitting at your table, longed to be able to do something like that? Instead, you watch others laughing, smiling, having fun dancing with random strangers while you pretend to enjoy your meals, quietly ignoring the vibe and enthusiasm of the dancers.

But, what if you could simply get up and ask some random guy or girl, at the bar or on the floor, for a dance… wouldn’t that be dreamy… just like in the movies. I remember watching Dirty Dancing and being mesmerized by two scenes- The famous ‘Time of your Life’ ending dance scene where Baby gets lifted up, and the scene about the watermelons, where Baby enters a world she would never have dreamed of – a world so unlike what her parents had… a world where couples just danced!

Just imagine what an amazing change it would be in your life if…

– You tagged along with your friends to a place, and unknown to you all, there was a dance social on and a cute guy, assuming that you were there for dancing, asked if you would like to dance. Wouldn’t it be a dream to not have to turn him down?

– You have the confidence to go ask that girl, dressed sexily in black, to jive.

– Your closest friends come up and say they wished they could dance just like you.

– Random people come up to you and say that you dance beautifully

– You no longer have to hold a drink in your hand, just to have an excuse for not wanting to dance at weddings.

How do you visualize your ideal life to be

Well, I can tell you that from my experience social dancing for over a decade, all of the above are possible. In fact, they are more than just possible!

  • It’s not just about learning steps to show off, but also for the first time in my life I had choices. I could go for a dance social or function, and NOT dance at all… not because I didn’t know how to, but because I didnt want to. I was in control, not shy nor awkward or clumsy, having to hide behind vodka shots.

  • I suddenly realised that I now had a whole new set of friends from different dance schools across Mumbai. While many of them were from Bandra, the more I went to the Willingdon Gym & Catholic Gymkhana at Charni Road, the more I started to see the same set of faces. Even the live band and DJs came to know me due to familiarity.

  • I got invited to hundreds of social dance gatherings that I never knew even existed! Wednesday nights were at the Bandra gym, Saturdays at the Catholic gym or Willingdon, Tuesdays were jive nights at Bandra, whereas Fridays were reserved for jiving in Malad!

  • Friends’ parties were a breeze. I no longer had to hide behind my glass of beer and worry about embarrassing myself if there was some cool Elvis music rocking and I was forced to pair up with a random girl just because everyone else was dancing. In fact, it became the opposite! Other couples stopped their dancing to accommodate me!!

  • And of course, the highlight of the year was the Christmas dance. Only after learning dance, did I start attending it and this was when I realised that I had a talent which others on the floor didn’t. The Christmas dance has more than 800 people crammed onto the floor, but I didn’t have to worry about ‘accidently’ elbowing some random stranger or stepping on my partner’s toes because I knew how to dance [whereas other guys constantly stared at their feet, trying to avoid stepping on anyone’s toes].

  • PS – I also got to mess around trying fun drops too!

Recently at a wedding, I noticed that my friend kept tapping her foot to the beats of the music, eagerly wanting to dance. So, I asked her why she didn’t ask one of her guy friends to Jive. She replied, “I’m scared that I will embarrass myself, and what if he doesn’t want to dance with me or my friends see my make a fool of myself? I’ll never be able to live that down!”

If this is your reality as well, then it’s time to change it.

In truth, this is what makes couple dancing exciting; the fact that you will be dancing with those other than your husband, wife, brother, sister, cousin. While you might still be scared, if you learn the right way first, and understand each step’s functionality, break it down and learn how to innovate, you won’t be wasting money and time.

In your new reality, you will always focus on training the right way and learning the learn key constructs of how a step is formed first.

Over the years, this mindset of understanding what you’re learning has led me to:

Learn dance forms such as the Chacha, Jive, Waltz, Rumba, Samba, Merengue, Salsa

Understand musicality better than most others who have been dancing for over 5 years

Participate in All India DanceSport Federation 2010 held in Delhi

Secure 4th place in the State competition held in Maharashtra.

Understand how to breakup dance steps from Insta & YouTube videos into their basic fundamental constructs,

Jiving at AlsSocialDance

Who am I?

I’m Alvito (nice to e-meet you, by the way), and I learnt Ballroom dancing way back in 2007. When I first started dancing, I found it really difficult and thought I had two left feet. But as I continued to dance through the years, I realised that there are specific tactics, processes, and hacks that if incorporated, can help me better at social dancing.

Ever heard of the 80 – 20 rule? Well, this is true in social dancing as well. 80% might be the steps or mechanics that you learn, but 20% is the training, flair, innovation and connection between partners that elevates the overall dance.

And yes, in case you were wondering, I have been dancing for more than 13+ years – and it doesn’t look like I’m stopping anytime soon! winkwink

Post COVID, the social dance scene in Mumbai has gotten a huge makeover and it doesn’t matter whether it’s Bachata, Kizomba, Salsa or Jive, the social dance community is growing faster than ever in the city.

How is Alssocialdance different from other dance classes or online videos?

Most other YouTube videos or dance classes are written to teach you footwork. It’s normally 1 step per class or a small choreography each session. No one takes the pain to deconstruct how a step is constructed or restructure the entire curriculum from scratch and reassemble it to make it learnable in a smart way. Learning it this way, means stronger fundamentals.

You see just by-hearting steps is not the solution.

Think about it this way – if there are a ton of steps freely available on YouTube, why isn’t everyone a fantastic dancer already?

Deep down, we all know the answer!

That’s why I started AlsSocialDance, to help you understand how fun and easy it is to dance with a partner. Here, you’ll find tips and tricks that constitute the 20% needed to take you from average dancer to AWESOME dancer! You probably already know that the Bandra gymkhana, Khar gymkhana, Wellingdon Catholic gym are a hub for social dancing with their weekly dose of Chacha, Jive and Ballroom music. And hey, maybe you’ve been there too –if not to dance, then just to watch others dance.

I think many fear couple dancing because it is with someone of the opposite sex – so naturally our palms get sweaty and we fumble, bumble and mess up our steps, eventually stepping on our partner’s toes!

But that’s not how it’s supposed to be – social dancing is meant to be easy, fun and exciting!

What is the Social Jive?

The Social Jive is a fun and energetic partner dance, usually danced at weddings or at socials. The beauty of this dance is that it’s one of the easiest forms of to learn and it doesn’t matter whether you have zero experience or two left feet in dancing!

Social dancing is more than just dancing; it is a way of meeting people, interacting and building self-confidence, all of which translate beyond the dance floor. Remember you are not performing for people; you just want to have fun trying out something new. To see yourself progress over time, that is what really matters. Dancing the Jive is also great exercise due to its intense energy. PS: You can check out some videos from our classes on Insta – https://www.instagram.com/alssocialdance/

What will you learn in the beginners course?

You will learn

-Social Jive [Partner dance form] fundamentals along with multiple steps

-Leading & Following. How to lead and how to follow different types of handholds and footwork

-Construction and framework of how 4/4 music works [enabling you to understand which Pop music songs you can jive to and which ones you can’t]

-Musicality. When should you add in a drop or lunge to add flavour to your dance moves? You can’t just add it n randomly now, can you?

-How to improve your dance craft on the floor so as to not cause a hindrance to your partner or anyone else on the social dance floor. After all, everyone comes there to just have fun, not to elbow shove one another.

Using the methods in this course, you will develop skills that will help you shine on the dancefloor.

Is AlsSocialDance right for you?

Learning to Jive is not for everyone

If you:

– Have absolutely no clue what jiving is and have never seen it at parties, weddings or online;

– Cannot invest 2 hrs per week to come for class

– Have no intention of ever dancing socially

– Prefer to always dance with only your spouse and don’t want to dance with other men or women

Then I’m telling you upfront not to join in.

But if on the other hand, you have a desire to try something that is easy, fun and exciting then, the social jive is for you.

WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY

So I’ve gone for more than a couple of classes now.. and despite being a Catholic I knew next to nothing about how to jive.. I was a little apprehensive at first.. but once I got there I had so much fun.. I met so many cool fun people and learnt more than a few cool jive moves.. I’m no expert yet, but I’m sure that I’ll get better over time.. I like how Al breaks each step down and patiently helps you get the steps right..Do yourself a favor and just join, you won’t regret it.. finally thank you so much Al, you Rock : )

Alvito has a really simple way of teaching steps and making it fun. As an instructor he puts in a lot of individual attention with each student. Quite approachable and always with a smile, it definitely put me at ease. He helps you not only understand the steps but also timing of the music and how to use it in social dancing. Looking forward to more of his classes! Farrell Vaz

FAQs?

I don’t have any dance experience; can I join in?

Having prior dance experience is actually not very beneficial when learning a new dance form. The reason is that you come in with pre conceived notions about what you’d expect the new dance class to deliver. This could be good, but could also be bad since every dance instructor is different and has his own tried and tested methods of teaching. Hence, an absolute beginner is like a sponge and soaks up all that the instructor gives.

My husband doesn’t like to dance, but I really want to dance. Do I need to have a dance partner to join in?

If you don’t have a partner, don’t worry, we always rotate partners during class so that everyone gets a chance to understand lead/follow. That being said, bringing someone along to join in with, is better. One- it gives you confidence that you’re not in this alone and second, since this is a couple dance form, it helps to ensure that there are an even number of pairings available.

How long will it take for me to get good in Jive?

Think of the Jive as if you were just learning to play the piano. Learning the piano depends completely on your capability, focus, dedication and practice. You continue going to the teacher month after month, learning a bit at a time, all the while honing your craft and skill. It is the same with the Jive. Our dance classes has a month-on-month progressive structure which means that after the 1st 8 sessions you’ll move on to the next level and so on. It is recommended to take classes for at least 6 months in order to become a good social dancer.

Are these offline or online classes?

These are in person classes, not online. Online is not a substitute for learning with an instructor.

Where are the classes held?

Classes are in Bandra (W). Please check in on WhatsApp for details of the timings.

What if I can’t attend a particular session during the month?

You can always make up the same session in one of the following batches.

How often are the classes conducted and how much time is required to learn the Jive?

2 hrs per week. Our dance class has a month-on-month progressive structure which means that after the 1st 8 sessions you’ll move on to the next level and so on. Every month, we progress to the next level. Each month you’ll learn ~7-10 new steps. It is recommended to take classes for at least 6 months in order to become a good social dancer

Can I join in whenever I want?

No. each month we start a new beginner’s level. While you can join in on the 2nd class, you’d have missed important fundamentals explained during the first class.

Can’t we learn online from YouTube instead?

While it might seem like a sensible option, YouTube is not a substitute for an in person tutor. An instructor can correct your mistakes on the fly, tell you what you are doing right (or wrong) and physically show you how to dance better with your partner. At the same time, you get to dance with multiple partners [we always rotate partners during class so that everyone gets a chance to understand lead/follow], whereas when you are dancing from home, you’ll be used to the leading/following of just your spouse.

Do I need special shoes/footwear?

No. Regular casual shoes will do. Just make sure that – from a hygiene perspective -they are non-sticky / dirty.

What if there is an unequal number of men and women?

By far, this is one of the biggest challenges in teaching partner dances that I’ve come across. The way we try to solve this is by rotating partners during class so that everyone gets multiple chances to dance with each other irrespective of the number of students in class. So you’ll never be stuck dancing with just one person.

What is the average age of those who jive?

On average, folks that join our dances classes are between 25-45yrs since Jive is faster paced than the Waltz or Bachata. However, we do have students from both ends of the age bracket.

Can I do a trial class?

If you are still unsure about directly jumping into a new batch, you can pay and do the first class of a batch as a single trial. Please DM and inform prior to the class.

Can I do private class instead of the group classes?

We do private classes, but only if there are two or more couples. The fun of couple and social dancing isn’t in learning the steps, it’s in being able to dance with different partners. A private class defeats this purpose if there are only 1-4 students since you get used to the person dancing with you. And so, while you might consider yourself to be a jive bunny, if you think about it, it hasn’t been working out too well for you if you can dance with one woman, but not with 5 other women on the dancefloor.

Are these regular classes or a single workshop? What if I want to do only a single session?

These are regular month-on-month classes. Single day workshops are held sporadically every few months. For a single session, see above about a trial class.

How many steps do we learn in a month?

Each month you’ll learn ~7-10 new steps. We also revise the previous steps by socially dancing with others during the class.

What if I forget the previous steps from the earlier month?

We revise previous steps during class. Also, you can come and revise steps from the lower levels for free. So that means if you’re in level 2, you’re welcome to come and repeat the entire level 1 for free.

I want to personalize my wedding with a first dance special choreography. Is that also possible?

Yes. Please contact me directly on WhatsApp
