Feel free to pause, replay, and practise along as many times as you need — that’s the beauty of learning through video.

Cuddle Walks | Social Dance and Jive classes in Mumbai #jivetutorial #partnerdance #socialjive
In ...the cuddle position, the lady rests comfortably against the **man’s right forearm**. From here, one of the easiest things to do is simply **walk together**, moving forward or backward as a pair.
When walking **forward**, the movement should be **heel–flat, heel–flat**.
The **man begins with the left foot**, followed by the right, continuing in a relaxed walking rhythm.
The **lady mirrors the movement**, beginning with her **right foot**.
When walking **backwards**, the action changes to **toe–flat, toe–flat**.
For the man, the movement becomes **left toe then flat, right toe then flat**, repeating the same pattern as you travel back.
The lady again mirrors the action using the opposite foot.
A useful point to remember is that the leader **does not need to verbally signal the change of direction**. The connection created by the **right forearm across the lady’s back** naturally communicates whether the couple is moving forward or backward. As long as there is good contact and no gap between partners, the follower will feel the direction change through the body connection.
Cuddle walks are especially useful on a **crowded dance floor**. They allow you to move smoothly through the space and guide your partner toward a clearer area before continuing with other jive figures.
This is a simple but practical movement that helps build **connection, control, and floor awareness** in social jive.

Written Tutorial: https://alssocialdance.com/tutorial-basic-step-in-jive/
In this **Jive Basic tutorial**, I explain one of the most fundamental steps in social ...jive. The movement is simple and beginner-friendly, built around a **four-step pattern: back, replace, side, replace**.
In partner dancing, the **lady starts with the right foot** and the **man starts with the left foot**. This natural opposite movement keeps both partners coordinated so that your feet never clash or step onto each other.
Another key concept in this step is **resistance**. Your elbows should stay close to your **body line**, maintaining a gentle structure in the arms. Avoid letting the elbows drift too far forward or collapse into what dancers often call **“spaghetti arms”**, where there is no structure in the connection.
Importantly, resistance does **not** mean gripping your partner’s hands tighter. You can maintain a stable **90-degree elbow position** and good connection without applying pressure through your hands.
This basic jive step forms the foundation for many other movements, so getting the rhythm, structure, and connection right from the beginning makes everything else much easier.
Perfect for **absolute beginners learning jive and social dancing**.

But only if you do it properly.
Cuddle to the Man’s Right
Here’s what’s actually happening 👇
The man starts with a basic.
On count 2, he lifts his left hand ...and the lady spins counter-clockwise on her left foot.
She turns 180 degrees and lands facing the same direction as the man.
Boom — you’re in a cuddle.
Now the IMPORTANT stuff (don’t skip)
🚨 Right forearm = MVP
Gentlemen, your right forearm MUST be fully across her back.
Not floating.
Not half-hearted.
Across. The. Back.
If it’s missing, unrolling her later becomes a nightmare because you’ve got no leverage.
🚨 No gap between bodies
This is a cuddle, not social distancing 😅
Bodies should be almost touching.
Why?
Because that’s what makes cuddle walks forward & backward effortless.
If there’s so much space that:
– my hands can pass through
– or my head could fit in between
…it’s not gonna work. Period.
Plot twist most leaders miss
You think your left hand is doing the magic?
Nah 😏
It’s actually the right hand that matters more.
You can execute this cuddle even from just a right-to-left connection —
spin her → land her straight onto your forearm → done.
Clean connection.
Close body.
Right forearm doing the real work.
Get this right and your cuddle instantly goes from meh to chef’s kiss 🔥

Most couples don’t struggle with Jive steps — they struggle with the tiny habits that lowkey ruin the whole vibe 😭
Like… you can know all the moves and ...still look messy if these things are happening.
Here’s your quick “stop doing this ASAP” checklist 👇
Mistakes we see ALL the time
❌ Thumbs pressing on her wrist
Bro… don’t clamp her wrist. As the music gets faster, that friction HURTS. Keep the hold light and comfy.
❌ Washing machine spins
If you’re spinning her, just keep your left hand calm and above her head.
Don’t start swinging your arm everywhere like you’re mixing laundry 😂
Less force = better balance.
❌ Looking at your feet
Instant confidence killer.
Look at your partner or the audience. Nobody paid to watch the floor.
❌ Free hand stuck behind her back
Leads can’t switch hands or go into cuddle smoothly. Keep that free hand available and alive.
And the BIG one…
❌ Spaghetti arms (zero tension)
No resistance = no control.
Then you start bumping into other couples like bowling pins 💀
Keep a little elbow tone + connection.
Not stiff… not floppy… just alive.
Clean frame + small fixes = instantly pro-looking dancing.
Same steps. 10x better energy.
Trust me, these tweaks change EVERYTHING.

Here is an easy step that you can try out with your partner. It's called change of place. Essentially you are switching places with your ...partner.

This step is not about strength.
It’s about ...counting, placement, and clean connection.
Multiple Spins in Jive
Leaders — listen up
✔ You count the spins. Always.
And spins are ODD numbers only.
1, 3, 5… even 21 if you’re feeling spicy 😏
Even numbers? Nope. Doesn’t resolve cleanly.
✔ This is not a washing machine
Keep your left hand above the centre of her head.
That’s your leverage point.
Stop swinging your arm all around — you’re working harder for no reason.
✔ Hands glide, they don’t grip
No thumbs. No fingers twisting.
Just palm-to-palm contact, lightly gliding.
If you’re squeezing, you’re already doing too much.
Ladies — this is your moment
✔ Non-spinning hand stays near your waist
That’s your left hand.
Keep it accessible so the leader can go straight into a cuddle after the last spin.
🚫 Hand behind the back = dead end.
It blocks follow-up steps and kills the flow.
✔ Understand the circle
You are spinning anti-clockwise on the spot…
…but travelling clockwise around the man.
Think of him as the centre of the circle, you moving around him.
✔ Ball of the foot. Always.
Never flat-footed.
Ball of foot = less friction, smoother turns, zero struggle.
Clean spins don’t look forced.
They look effortless, controlled, and confident.
Get these details right and your spins will feel easy AND look unreal 🔥

It’s actually the same cuddle… just with a cleaner, cooler connection.
***Cuddle variation: right-to-right connection***
Instead of the regular ...two-hand or normal handhold, 👉 the man’s right hand connects to the lady’s right hand.
From there, you naturally land in a cuddle with the arm placed on the lady’s right shoulder blade.
Now here’s the part most people overthink 👇
For the lady? Nothing changes.
🥇Same cuddle action.
🥈Same body motion.
🥉Same timing.
So if it feels easy… that’s because it is 😏
This variation is perfect because very often we land up in a R2R connection and then have to do basics in between while goingback to normal hand hold, so that we can then switch into the cuddle. Now you do not have to 😁
Different connection.
Same movement.
Instant upgrade.
Try it, play with it, and let it flow 💃🕺

Meet the Twist — stylish, dynamic, and way easier than it looks if you get the details right.
The Twist (interlocked hands version)
Here’s how it ...actually works 👇
You interlock hands and place them behind the necks, then start twisting while walking around each other in a small semicircle.
Leader details (don’t skip this)
✔ Your right hand goes behind the lady’s neck
✔ Your left hand goes behind your own neck
✔ Stay close and keep the movement compact
✔ Walk as you twist — don’t twist on the spot
When the twist finishes, you slide out cleanly into a right-to-right connection.
And now the fun really starts 😏
Options from here
✨ Go straight into a hand-on-shoulder cuddle
✨ OR take her into three clean spins
✨ OR flip it — three spins first, then immediately into the twist
⚠️ Super important warning for the guys:
If you’re late putting your right hand behind her neck, her momentum keeps travelling forward.
That delay = sharp shoulder pain for her.
Be early, be clear, be smooth.
Looks fancy.
Feels powerful.
Flows into EVERYTHING.
Once you get the timing right, this step is pure gold 🔥
