Jive Tutorial: The Twist Step (Interlocking Hands Behind the Neck)

Both partners start twisting their lower bodies slightly from side to side while maintaining the hand connection behind the neck. The movement should feel playful rather than forced. This twisting of the feet should be forward moving i.e the couple begins to twist around each other in a semicircle. This twisting motion is important because it keeps the step dynamic rather than simply walking around in a semicircle.

Rotating Basic (90 CW) in Jive

The rotating basic is a pretty fun step that allows you to start rotating, after all that’s what the jive is all about! Movement!! It’s not a stationary dance (unlike bachata which is more or less danced in the same position with minimal rotation or movement) and so it makes sense to learn immediately how to rotate it.

Why do musicians count ā€œ1, 2, 3, 4ā€, and dancers count ā€œ5, 6, 7, 8ā€?

Why do musicians count ā€œ1, 2, 3, 4ā€, and dancers count ā€œ5, 6, 7, 8ā€?

By saying ā€œ5678ā€ I am saying to my dancers ā€œHere are the last 4 beats of the intro or right foot measure and the timing. Get ready to start on 1 with your left footā€. If I am rehearsing a figure and I need my dancers to start on their right foot, I would actually count ā€œ1234ā€ and they would know that the next count is 5. This is done very often when practicing but rarely when performing.

What do you enjoy about dancing when you dance?

Dancing is a way to express myself and fully enjoy the music I hear. I prefer partner dancing (since I’m not so skilled in other forms of single dancing such as contemporary, ballet, hip-hop etc…). The better you get though, there is a bit of an ego boost where the attention draw from onlookers is appreciated. You get to show-off a little too!

Tutorial: Basic Step in Jive

The MacJive is danced to a 4/4 timing of music (unlike the Waltz which is ¾ time).  In the basic step (as in the Ballroom Jive / Salsa/ Bachata / ChaCha / Waltz etc..), both dancers dance the opposite leg to each other so that neither kicks each other. So if the man moves his left leg, then the woman moves her right leg and vice versa.

4 types of Jivers on the floor

Once I was in the Catholic Gymkhana dancing and whilst the band was playing, one of the couples stopped dancing only to grab the microphone from the lead singer and start singing!
