If youâve been dancing jive for a while, youâll know that the cuddle is one of the most versatile positions in the entire dance. From cuddle walks to unrolls, spins, and stylish exits, itâs a move that shows up everywhere.
But hereâs a fun little variation that adds a fresh look to your dancing without actually changing the mechanics of the step.
Instead of entering the cuddle using the normal two-hand hold, this version uses a right-to-right connection only.
At first glance, it might look like a completely different move. But the interesting part is this:
For the lady, nothing actually changes.
What Makes This Cuddle Variation Different?
In the regular cuddle, the leader usually turns the follower into the cuddle using both handsâtypically a right-to-left connection combined with the second hand helping guide the turn.
In this variation, however, the leader catches the follower using only the right hand connected to her right hand.
From this right-to-right hold, the leader guides the follower into the cuddle so that she ends up standing beside him in the familiar cuddle position.
The main visual difference is that the leaderâs right forearm lands across the ladyâs right shoulder blade rather than across her back from a two-hand entry.
The result is a cuddle that looks slightly different but still feels completely natural.
For the leader, the main focus is maintaining a clear and controlled right-to-right connection.
Instead of relying on two hands, you guide the turn using only the right arm and allow the follower to rotate naturally into the cuddle position.
As she completes the turn, your right forearm settles comfortably across her right shoulder blade, creating a stable frame for the cuddle.
What the Lady Is Actually Doing
Now hereâs the part that many dancers tend to overthink.
For the follower?
Nothing changes.
-
Same cuddle action
-
Same body movement
-
Same timing
-
Same turn
The follower still rotates into the cuddle exactly the same way she would during the standard version. Her steps, balance, and motion remain identical.
The only difference is the hand connection that initiates the move.
This is why this variation works so wellâit adds variety without requiring the follower to learn anything new.
The Leaderâs Role
For the leader, the main focus is maintaining a clear and controlled right-to-right connection.
Instead of relying on two hands, you guide the turn using only the right arm and allow the follower to rotate naturally into the cuddle position.
As she completes the turn, your right forearm settles comfortably across her right shoulder blade, creating a stable frame for the cuddle.
From here, youâre perfectly set up to continue into many familiar jive patterns.
What You Can Do Next
Once you land in this one-hand cuddle position, you can easily transition into several other moves.
Some popular follow-ups include:
-
Cuddle walks forward
-
Cuddle walks backward
-
Unrolling the follower
- Send the lady out & pull back into twists
-
Spins or send-outs
Because the body position is essentially the same as the traditional cuddle, all the usual variations still work beautifully.
Why This Variation Is Worth Learning
Small variations like this are great for adding texture to your dancing. Even though the mechanics stay the same, the different entry point makes the move look fresh and interesting on the dance floor.
It also helps leaders become more comfortable leading with fewer hand connections, which improves overall control and clarity in partner dancing.
Sometimes the best variations are not about adding complexityâtheyâre about simplifying the connection while keeping the movement smooth.
Watch the Video Demonstration
Iâve included a video demonstration below this article where you can see exactly how this right-to-right cuddle works in practice.
Seeing the entry, positioning, and final cuddle frame will make it much easier to understand how the step flows.
Give it a try during your next practice session and see how naturally it fits into your jive patterns.
Happy dancing! đđș
